Student work is sensitive, and LawGrader is built so that only the people who should see it can.
Who can see what
- Students see only their own work and their own feedback, and only after you release it. They never see other students' work or grades.
- Grades stay hidden until you release them. A grade in progress is visible only to you and your teaching team.
- Access is scoped to your class and team. Access controls are enforced by the database, not just the interface, so a person can only reach the classes and submissions they are entitled to.
How AI grading uses the work
When you grade, a student's submission is sent to the AI provider that does the reading, for the sole purpose of grading it against your rubric. It is not used to advertise to students or shared with other customers. We keep a copy of what was sent for up to 30 days so we can look into a grade that comes out wrong, and it is cleared automatically after that. If you delete the submission, that copy goes with it straight away rather than waiting.
How long we keep it
Three different things happen to old work, and it is worth knowing which is which.
- Archiving a class is not deleting it. An archived class drops out of your class list and keeps everything: assignments, submissions, grades, feedback. It stays that way for as long as your account exists, and Restore under "Archived" on your home page brings it straight back. No clock is running on an archive, so archiving at the end of a term is the safe way to clear your list.
- Deleting is reversible for 30 days. Deleting a class removes it along with its assignments and submissions, and it appears under "Recently deleted" on your home page with the days remaining. Restore it there and everything comes back. After 30 days it is permanently removed: the records and the uploaded files behind them, with no way for anyone, including us, to recover them. The one thing this does not reach is a problem report someone sent about that work, which keeps its picture until the report is closed. See below.
- Deleting your account is immediate and permanent. From Settings, "Permanently delete this account" removes your account and everything tied to it, including every file uploaded under it. There is no recovery window on this one.
You can delete an archived class directly from the Archived list, without restoring it first.
What a problem report contains
When you report a problem from inside the app, the report includes a picture of the page you were on, along with a short trail of what you had just clicked. That is what makes a report reproducible instead of a guess, and it is the reason most reports get fixed quickly.
It also means that a report you send from a page showing a student's work contains that work. We would rather say so plainly than have you discover it.
What happens to it: seven days after a report is closed, the picture is deleted and the text of the report is put through redaction that removes names, email addresses, phone numbers and identifiers. The report itself is then deleted ninety days after it was closed. Until the first of those, a report is readable only by you and by our own staff working on it, and the pictures are kept in private storage.
Deleting your account does this straight away, without waiting for the seven days, and for every report you have sent rather than only the closed ones.
One thing worth knowing: redaction is thorough but it is not a guarantee, so we describe the result as redacted rather than anonymous.
